Jordanian Rainfall-Intensity Data Collection Program

Jordanian Meteorological Department (JMD)
  • 24 stations are equipped with strip-chart recorders. An estimated 50,000 strip charts have been collected historically, and a large number of these charts have not yet been digitized. Data have been collected since 1923 at some stations. The JMD database contains about 300 Mb of meteorological data (including temperature, humidity, wind speed, and others).
  • Strip charts have been processed by hand for eight stations for the years between 1959 and 1988 and are available in a tabular summary format. The raw data from these charts were not able to be located.
  • Historically, the section manager would receive daily-value reports from field stations once per month in a hand-written format. He and his staff would quality control these data and pass them along to data-entry staff who would input the values to the JMD agency database (Oracle 8). These values would then be printed and reviewed again for data-entry accuracy. WMO’s Clicom software (built by NOAA), with Dataease, historically was used for data processing. In 1998 CLICOM was replaced by the Jordan Climate Data Management (JCDMS) software, an Oracle-based system built by the JMD. JCDMS is now used for data processing.

Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation (JMWI)

  • 40 stations are equipped with strip-chart recorders.
  • 55 stations are equipped with tipping-bucket recorders.
  • Data for selected stations through 1985 have been processed by hand and exist in tabular summary tables in hard-copy format; the data were used to create basic probability curves which were subsequently published.
  • The JMWI agency database contains about 15MB of daily-value rainfall data.
  • The current JMWI hydrologic database is Oracle.
